Kona Coffee Grades Explained: From Extra Fancy to Peaberry

Why Kona Coffee Has Grades at All

Hawaii is the only state in the country that grows coffee on a large scale, and it takes that crop seriously. To protect the Kona name, the Hawaii Department of Agriculture set up an official grading system that sorts beans by quality before they ever reach a store shelf. This is one of the things that sets Kona apart from many other coffee regions, where grading can be loose or skipped entirely. When you see a grade on a bag of true Kona, it is not a random sales word. It points to a measured standard for bean size, moisture, and the number of flawed beans allowed in the batch.

The grades mostly come down to three things: how big the beans are, how few defects they have, and how evenly they were dried. Bigger, cleaner, more uniform beans earn the higher grades. Smaller or more flawed beans fall into the lower ones. None of the graded beans are bad coffee. The system is really about sorting good beans into better and best.

The Main Kona Grades, From Top to Bottom

Most Kona coffee you will see comes from what graders call Type 1 beans. These are the normal flat beans, two of which grow inside each coffee cherry. Type 1 Kona is ranked into a clear ladder of grades. Knowing the order makes label shopping much easier.

  • Kona Extra Fancy: the largest beans with the fewest defects, the top of the ladder.
  • Kona Fancy: slightly smaller than Extra Fancy but still large, clean, and high quality.
  • Kona Number 1: good, solid beans that are a bit smaller, with a few more defects allowed.
  • Kona Select and Kona Prime: more affordable grades that mix bean sizes and allow more defects, often used in everyday blends.

Extra Fancy sits at the top because the beans are the biggest and the most uniform, which usually means a smoother and more consistent roast. As you move down the ladder, the price tends to drop, but the coffee is still real Kona grown in the same region.

What Makes Peaberry Special

Peaberry is the grade that confuses people the most, so it deserves its own moment. Normally a coffee cherry holds two flat beans that grow side by side. Once in a while, only one round bean forms inside the cherry instead of two. That single round bean is called a peaberry, and it shows up in only a small share of any harvest.

Because peaberries are round rather than flat, many roasters believe they roast more evenly and bring out a brighter, more concentrated flavor. They have to be sorted out by hand or by machine, and since they are rare, Kona Peaberry usually costs more than the standard grades. Whether it tastes better is partly a matter of personal taste, but plenty of coffee fans seek it out for its lively, clean cup.

Which Grade Should You Buy

The best grade for you depends on how you drink your coffee and how much you want to spend. If you love sipping a careful pour over and noticing every note, a higher grade like Extra Fancy or Peaberry rewards that attention. If you brew a big pot every morning and add milk or cream, a Number 1 or a quality blend grade can taste wonderful without the top shelf price. Most Kona is grown from arabica plants, so even the everyday grades start from a smooth, gentle base.

One important reminder still applies no matter the grade. A grade word only means something on a bag that is truly 100 percent Kona. A cheap Kona blend can borrow a fancy sounding name while holding very little real Kona inside. Always check that the bag says 100 percent Kona first, then let the grade guide your choice from there.

A Smarter Way to Shop for Kona

Once you understand the grades, buying Kona coffee feels a lot less like guessing. Extra Fancy and Fancy give you the largest, cleanest beans, Number 1 offers great value, and Peaberry delivers that rare round bean with a bright character all its own. Match the grade to the way you actually drink your coffee, confirm it is 100 percent Kona, and you will get exactly the cup you are paying for.
