How to Make Kona Coffee in a Pour-Over

A Clean, Bright Way to Brew Kona

If you want to taste everything that makes Kona coffee special, the pour-over is hard to beat. This simple manual method uses a cone, a paper filter, and a slow pour of hot water to produce a clean, bright, and aromatic cup that really shows off Kona’s smooth, low-acid character. It takes just a few minutes and a little attention, and the results are worth it.

What You Will Need

Pour-over gear is affordable and easy to find. To get started you need a dripper, a matching paper filter, and a vessel to brew into, plus freshly ground coffee.

  • A pour-over cone (V60, Kalita, or a simple plastic dripper) and paper filters.
  • Fresh 100% Kona coffee, ground to a medium texture like table salt.
  • A kettle, ideally a gooseneck for a slow, steady pour.
  • A kitchen scale and a timer, which make it repeatable.

The Ratio and Grind

A good starting point is 1 gram of coffee to about 16 grams of water, so roughly 22 grams of Kona to 350 grams of water for a large cup. Grind just before you brew, aiming for a medium grind. Too fine and the water drains slowly and turns bitter, too coarse and the cup tastes thin and weak. Heat your water to about 200 degrees Fahrenheit, which is just off the boil.

Step by Step

The whole brew takes about three minutes. Move gently and keep the pour slow and even.

  • Put the filter in the cone and rinse it with hot water, then discard that water. This removes any paper taste and warms the cup.
  • Add the grounds, level them, and set your scale to zero.
  • Pour just enough water to wet the grounds, about twice their weight, and let them bloom for 30 to 45 seconds. You will see them puff up and release gas.
  • Pour the rest of the water slowly in gentle circles, keeping the bed of grounds submerged, until you reach your target weight.
  • Let it finish dripping. The total brew time should land around three minutes.

Dial It In to Taste

If your cup tastes sour or weak, grind a little finer or pour a touch slower. If it tastes bitter or harsh, grind a little coarser or use slightly cooler water. Small adjustments make a big difference, and once you find your sweet spot you can repeat it every morning. Because Kona is naturally smooth and low in acidity, a pour-over lets its chocolate and nutty notes shine without any fuss.

Enjoy the Ritual

Part of the joy of a pour-over is the few quiet minutes it takes to make. Use fresh, high-quality 100% Kona beans, grind right before brewing, and pour with care, and you will be rewarded with one of the cleanest, most flavorful cups you can make at home.
